This engraving of the Red Room was made in September 1856 for the United States Magazine. It is the earliest representation of the parlor, which is one of three state parlors on the State Floor of the Executive Mansion named after a color. In this engraving, the redecoration of the Red Room under President Franklin Pierce is depicted with the famous Gilbert Stuart portrait of George Washington hanging on the wall. The room was also referred to as the Washington Parlor at the time because of the portrait's presence. The portrait would remain in the Red Room until 1929 when it was moved to the East Room by First Lady Lou Hoover.
